Steel is thick and sturdy. The long shaft does not bend/yield at all. Allows one to cut pieces of apple later according to ones needs, as cutter just take away the core. Unlike other apple cutters with multiple steel blades which makes it dangerous to wash everytime thinking that the blades might cut your fingers, this one has less chance to do the same. If you always use dishwasher, it may not matter. Secondly other types of cutters with multiple blades and without the slotted plastic base do not cut till the end. This cutter though looks like made for a lifetime if not longer. Cutter itself came in a manufacturer cardboard box that was put in another bigger amazon cardboard box giving plenty of protection during shipping to avoid damage.
