The book is written for managers who have to supervise and control their employees as well as complete certain essential office tasks. It covers certain techniques that could help its readers in improving their productivity, job satisfaction and personal prosperity. This is because individual satisfaction can gradually lead to the growth of any organisation.
The authors of the book Kenneth Hartley Blanchard and Spencer Johnson have briefly explained few methods of management that are based on few studies in medicine and behavioural sciences. The book talks about three practical management techniques such as one minute goal setting, one minute praising and one minute reprimand. These three simple yet effective techniques could do wonders for both individual and organisational growth.
The one minute goal setting technique says that each member of a team is essential to fulfil the set goals. For instance, in order to complete daily, weekly, monthly or yearly tasks, team effort is needed, and for that, individual effort matters a lot.
One minute praising technique is all about appreciation. According to this technique a manager must reward a team member for completing a specific task efficiently. Plus, a manager could spend a minute to acknowledge a hardworking employee.
The last technique is one-minute reprimand that says that the manager has to give feedback to few members who committed mistakes in their tasks. But the feedback must be given in polite manner so that their interpersonal relations are not affected.
By following these three effective techniques, a manager may grow individually as well as lead to organisational growth in long term. Written in simple, easy-to-understand language, the book can help the readers understand how simple changes can actually work in real management situations.

One of the most finest book I’ve ever read
Just finished reading the book, The One Minute Manager by Kenneth Blanchard. It is the most fantastic book ð I have ever read and the style of writing is absolutely brilliant. It is not a very lengthy book, just around 100 pages and you can finish it over a weekend. The book is especially for those who want to become managers. Here are some key takeaways about the book:âï¸ This book displays a conversation between a person aspiring to become a manager and someone who is already a manager also called a “One Minute Manager” and his three team members.âï¸ It conveys few but very strong messages about what good management looks like and that too in the form of a short and brief book and it tells “Three important secrets” that could do wonders for both individual and organizational growth.âï¸ This book tells the importance of setting goals with clear expectations and target dates along with your team member. The author has given a name called “One Minute Goals”âï¸Next, it talks about recognizing and praising the achievement or success of team members on a timely basis also called One Minute Praisings. This encourages them to keep up the good work. All you have to do is to praise their behavior and say how good you feel about it and then pause to let them feel good too.âï¸Also, this book talks about the importance of giving feedback in case the team member commits a mistake or when something goes wrong in the form of “One Minute Re-direct”âï¸It tells you how to help your team member when something goes wrong rather than waiting for the performance review. So, to sum up, I would recommend you to read this book and then share it with others ð

A young man searches all over the world for an example of a great manager
A young man searches all over the world for an example of a great manager. He wants to work for one and learn how to become one. But most of the workplaces he has seen do not provide any great inspiration. He meets hard-nosed managers who get things done but who the staff do not much like, and nice managers who love their staff but do not pay enough attention to the bottom line.Could there exist a manager who combines the best qualities of each? He hears about someone who seems to fit the bill, ironically in a nearby town. To his surprise, this manager agrees to see him right away and to talk about how he manages his people. So begins the allegory of ‘the one minute manager’.You are to be forgiven for being wary of a method of managing people which purports to only take one minute. Can it really work? Sales figures for this book suggest that: a) manager’s dream of spending less time on staff motivation and problems, and will grasp at anything which suggests a way out; or b) there must actually be something to this style of management. The way of the one minute managerThere are three ‘secrets’ or elements to one minute management:1. Agree on goals (no more than half a dozen) with staff members. Make sure each goal is written on a separate piece of paper. This is ‘one minute goal setting’. From this point on staff know exactly what is expected of them and will rarely come to the boss with problems – they know they are hired to solve them.2. Staff should re-read the goals frequently as a means of ensuring performance matches expectations. They should also provide detailed records of progress for the managers. This is not so that the manager can breath down their neck, but so he or she can ‘catch you doing something right’. This allows for ‘one-minute praisings’, which provide immediate and specific positive feedback on actions undertaken.3.If a person has the skills to do something right and it is not done right, the manager will provide a ‘one-minute reprimand’. This stern rebuke is of the action or behaviour, not the person, and the manager will express consternation that it is not up to the staff member’s usual high standards. After the reprimand, the manager reminds the person how much they are valued. The second part of the story attempts to explain why one-minute management works. One minute goal setting works because “the number one motivator of people is feedback on results”. We like to know how we are doing, and if we are doing well we feel good. The one minute manager has a plaque on his wall which reads: “Take a minute – Look at your goals – Look at your performance – See if your behavior matches your goals”. Simple but effective. One minute praisings are also effective for motivational reasons. It is rare to find someone who can know how to do everything well from day one; you have to put some effort into training. “So the key to training someone to do a new task is, in the beginning, to catch them doing something approximately right until they can eventually learn to do it exactly right.” Not discipline, only encouragement works with people who are not secure in what they are doing. Praise gets them moving in the right direction. Though it need take up very little time, praise is the fuel which can drive a whole enterprise. One minute reprimands work because they are the fairest form of feedback for correcting below-par performance. Because goals have been set and expectations are so transparent, the person will usually see when the reprimand is fair. The manager is respected because he has “spoken the simple truth”. As the reprimand is quick and focused on specific action (not the person themselves), there is less bad feeling; when the encounter is over it always ends on a good note and can be soon forgotten or even made light of.

It’s really just okay…
I heard a number of feedbacks (including Amazon Review) about this book before I purchased this. Now, it seems to me that everything was rumor and marketing pitch to sell this book. I was expecting to learn some effective tools and technique, which successful people apply at their workplace to improve their productivity. Before this, I’d got through the FISH book which was again was a fairy tale story. In some Amazon Review, it was mentioned that One Minute Manager is a good read. I am not too sure how people rate this book but my idea is simple. If you can learn something from a book then definitely it’s a great book. Whereas, If everything is story where a person is meeting different people who is suggesting them to prepare a one-minute plan , give one-minute appraisal and provide one-minute critics for their work then definitely it’s a novel!Author, Kenneth Blanchard is very experienced person but I see him through-out the book talking about a superficial way to say how to manage people. I am just “okay” with this book.I will read Google reviews than Amazon reviews before I buy a book on Amazon/Flipkart. Thank you!
